White Collar and Blue Collar are common terms to describe financial success of a man and his family.
White Collar being associated with having wealth because the common wealthy man would wear a suit to work
and a blue collar which is associated with the working class because the color of the common man’s workwear
involves a blue collared work shirt. This story is about how a man from a white collar background and a woman
from a blue collar background are able to help one another out although the way they were raised were so much
different.

Dan was born into money; his dad is a very successful Oil man in North Texas who had no short access of money.
The business has multiple gulf shore oil rigs. This money put lenses on Dan’s eyes on how he perceived the world.
To him money could solve all problems and those without it were inferior. This was the thought even though this
man had been struggling with alcoholism since the time he was 13, his wife despised him, his kids hardly knew
him and he had everything to fall back on even if he didn’t show up to work (which he didn’t). He had grown up
with absolutely no responsibility and by the time he was beginning to do what grown men do (get a job, have a
family), he thought money would be the best answer because it is common for power hungry men to throw money
at people to solve their problems. This man owned multiple cars, boats, even planes; if he wanted it he had it, but
he was missing a key ingredient to life, which was true happiness through the simple things that no amount of
money can buy. When Dan met Nancy, he was trying to turn his life back around because he was beginning to
see the losses of the life he was going down. He was attending AA meetings for alcoholic classes, he was
beginning to show up for work, and was trying to make amends with his family.

Nancy grew up on the far end of the spectrum, her father had passed away at 4 from alcoholism and her mother
was legally blind. At the age of 14 Nancy had her first job at a Five and Dime store. This put a lens on Nancy’s
life, in which she had to perceive the world from a workers standpoint, “don’t work, don’t eat”. She met her
husband when she was 18 and they had a son. By the time she was 21 her husband and she were in tough
financial times. Her husband drove a delivery truck in the day and worked on a trash truck in the evenings.
There wasn’t a lot of money to go around, so much so that on some days they wouldn’t have the gas necessary
to go to work, and they had to walk. This limited Nancy’s options on where she could find jobs so she looked in
the local newspaper and happened to find an oil company. It just so happened that this oil company was Dan’s
fathers. Nancy was hired and trained by a lady named Flo Until a man named Dick asked her to work for him as
a file clerk. This did not limit her though, she found every excuse to look for extra work which even included
janitorial work sometimes. Through this work ethic, Nancy was able to rise through the ranks and by the time
her and Dan met she was doing cash management for 158 companies with 10 employees under her. Keep in
mind this lady used hard work and dedication to rise through the ranks in that office not a degree that automatically
put her there.

Nancy’s boss Dick, had been diagnosed with cancer at the time in which she had met Dan, who coincidentally
happened to have his corporate secretary Sharon, be diagnosed with cancer as well. Dan happened to be very
distressed due to the fact that Sharon was in a way Dan’s support system. Now at this time, Nancy had no respect
for Dan due to him being a wrecker of so many people's lives. But in this dual tragedy, Dan and Nancy began to
support each other as well as Dick and Sharon. They began donating platelets in the mornings once every six
weeks. In this time they were stuck in a room together for at least 2 hours, so in this time they were forced to
also conversate with each other. It wasn’t until Dan needed someone to wipe his nose that they began to form a
friendship in which Dan would seek advice through Nancy. Although Dan had a share in the business, Nancy held
nothing back when it came to telling the truth. In a way Dan respected this so he continued to ask Nancy for
advice on personal troubles. He did not have this type of support with his home life and it showed through him
putting himself first with his alcoholism and not tending to his family’s needs.

By this time Dan had been drinking hard liquor continuously for 25 years. It was just as simple as him putting
the bottle down and walking away; he had a psychological and well as physical need for the drug. Nancy would
encourage him daily by trying to find things like jokes and encouragement to keep his mind off the liquor. Now
at this time, Dan was about 4 months clean when one day he went into Nancy’s office, slammed the door and
sat with his face in his hands. He was trembling from the addiction as well as crying due to being ashamed of
his addiction. Nancy comforted him as well as gave him a layout that would ultimately help him to end the
problem. She told him to mark each clean day off his calendar which would give him something to build on
while he was going through this process. For the next 3 years, Dan had his highs and lows but ultimately stuck
with this plan. He hasn’t taken a drink since.
About 10 years after this, Dan again walks into Nancy’s office, This time not for advice but to explain to ![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1hehyphenhyphenGKURHe_mWkafdPFzPjECUQgEIwBDAm3vjqj9m9kXr4xsQRWJDz3M7-o9Vzrmw9m5CMF8xcPomcM3UMWzxxG-7z1BZ_LEbLqua4hcJm8Ak1yTy2_sOy8JNoTQFL28Db3CzAbrZKo/s320/Crying.jpg)

him how she had saved his life. The liquor had taken nearly everything from him but his materials. This includes
his wife, his kids, even some of his memories. Now he was able to take hold of his responsibilities by being able
to rebuild the bridges to his children to show his love for his grandchildren as well as being responsible enough
to show up to work and get it done. In his old lens, Dan, a man who had “everything” was able to straighten
himself out from a woman who had “nothing”. Nancy showed him her lense and how it takes the struggle and
the hard work in order to better oneself. Dan finally saw this and it has changed his whole perspective although
they were from completely different backgrounds. Multiculturalism was able to save this man’s life because
when he had no one to turn to but an outsider, she was able to turn the white collar son of a rich oil man into a
respectable man who is now thoughtful and caring in everything he does.
